ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages)



If English is not your first language, come and see how we can help you improve your English in so many ways.

In our English classes you will develop your speaking, listening, reading and writing skills to help you with:

- Everyday life tasks
- Finding work
- Learning how to use a computer
- Supporting your children as they learn English at school

What ESOL classes do we offer?

- A range of fun and interesting classes during mornings, afternoons and evenings. We have flexible start dates and have classes at Dearne Valley College and local community venues.
- The opportunity to take a nationally recognised City and Guilds qualification and move through the levels from Entry Level to Level 2 in speaking and listening, and/or reading and writing as your skills improve.

How much will the courses cost?

- Some of our English courses are free, subject to conditions and home/overseas status. Please ask for details and be prepared to produce evidence if required.

ESOL Courses at Dearne Valley College

Pre-Entry level

This course is for complete beginners in speaking, listening, reading and writing.

The course will help you to become more confi dent in using English. You will learn to understand and answer simple questions about everyday topics and increase the vocabulary that you need to complete important tasks such as filling in forms; job applications and CVs. You will achieve a Dearne Valley College certificate of attendance and achievement.

This course is to be held at Dearne Valley College and also at some community venues. Please ask for more details.

Length of course: 5 hours per week for 12 weeks
Days: Monday and Wednesday, 9.30am to 12pm

Entry level Speaking and listening

This course is for people who want to study English as a second language.

You will develop your speaking and listening skills and achieve a nationally recognised qualification in speaking and listening.

You will improve your vocabulary and gain confidence. You will also develop your reading and writing skills to help with tasks such as filling in forms, completing job applications and CVS.

This course is to be held at Dearne Valley College but it is also running at some community venues. Please ask for more details.

Length of course: 5 hours per week for 12 weeks
Days: Tuesday and Thursday, 9.30am to 12pm

Level 1 Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening


This course is for you if you have English as your second language and you want to achieve a nationally recognised qualification in speaking, listening reading and writing.

The course will help you to become more confident in your speaking and listening, reading and writing skills. You will also build up the skills to use a computer, complete forms such as CVs, job applications and develop the techniques needed for interviews and presentations.

This course is to be held at Dearne Valley College.

Length of course: 5 hours per week for 12 weeks
Days: Tuesday and Thursday, 1pm to 3.30pm

Level 2 Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening

This full year programme is for you if English is your second language and will give you the opportunity to achieve a nationally recognised qualification.

During the course you will explore the language and develop your speaking, listening, reading and writing skills.

The key focus of the course is to help you extend your language skills to a higher level for everyday life, the work place or for further education. Employability skills such as CV building, interview techniques and presentations are covered to support you as you apply for jobs.

This course is to be held at Dearne Valley College.

Length of course: 2.5 hours per week for 40 weeks
Days: Tuesday 6.15pm to 8.45pm
