Celebrating the 5th Annual Animal and Land-Based HE Research Challenge
The 5th Annual Animal and Land-Based HE Research Challenge
What a day! We are still buzzing from the energy, passion, and sheer brilliance of the minds that filled the room at our recent Higher Education (HE) Inter-College Animal Care Research Challenge. Marking the 5th annual competition.
We were absolutely thrilled to welcome over 150 attendees at Dearne Valley College, making it a big and vibrant turnout! We were honoured to take part for the first time this year, and after experiencing the incredible energy of the day, we already can’t wait for next year!
When this competition first launched, it began with just 4 colleges and universities taking part. Seeing the growth and for us to be able to join in this year, and having 10 institutions represented this year, is nothing short of phenomenal.

A quote from our Director of Campus, Stacey;
It was fantastic to host the 5th Animal and Land-based HE research inter-college competition. To see this grow from 4 colleges and universities to 10 is phenomenal, and the dedication and effort of every single student is a real credit to them, their lecturers and their institutions.
I am super proud to have hosted this for another successful year, and I am really looking forward to planning the next one in 2027 and seeing it grow further.’

A Symphony of Science: From Prions to Earthworms
If you ever needed proof of how diverse and far-reaching the animal and land-based sector is, this event was it. The sheer variety of topics on display was deeply inspiring. Our researchers didn’t hold back, diving into critical global challenges and niche ecological wonders alike.
Attendees were treated to insights spanning Sustainability, Equine Science, Prion Loads, Earthworms, and truly everything in between! The breadth of knowledge and research proved that, whether looking at microscopic threats or macro-environmental sustainability, our students are looking into tackling real-world issues with academic rigour.

Science Gets Creative: The ‘Research Bakes’
In addition to traditional academic formats, the event featured a brilliantly creative twist- Research Bakes!
Students were challenged to take their hypotheses, data sets, and field subjects and translate them into confectionery masterpieces. Participants baked and decorated stunning cakes that directly related to their specific research topics. It was a fantastic (and delicious) way to showcase not just academic talent, but some serious culinary artistry.
More Than Just Competition: Camaraderie in Action
While the judges certainly had their work cut out for them given the incredibly high standard of submissions, the true highlight of the day was the atmosphere.
To see everyone’s poster, presentations and genuine camaraderie was phenomenal. The event has evolved into far more than just a contest; it is a collaborative hub. Watching students from different institutions huddled over research posters, sharing ideas, networking and cheering each other on during presentations embodied the exact spirit of community.

Looking Ahead to 2027
To every presenter, attendee, judge and mentor who made the day possible: thank you! The dedication to advancing animal and land-based sciences across all 10 institutions is what made this day an absolute triumph.
With momentum at an all-time high, the countdown to the future is already on. We can’t wait to see what the 2027 event grows into-and we can’t wait to take part!
