Hair braiding at Education Encompassed Day

Education Encompassed at Dearne Valley College

23 February 2024

This month Dearne Valley College hosted staff from across the RNN Group to take part in a Teaching, Learning and Health and Wellbeing day. The event, called Education Encompassed, was to support staff towards shaping the future of education.

Staff attended sessions on the future of teaching, delivered by specialists in their areas. We were visited by Stef Tinsley, an educational consultant, who completed our key note speech and followed with a session titled ‘Curriculum Without the Rules’. Dr Kay Sidebottom, a lecturer in Education from the University of Stirling, delivered sessions on ‘Decolonisation of Curriculum’ and Laura Harrop, from City and Guilds, delivered information on the qualification reforms.

We also had the Education and Training Foundation present two sessions on ‘Embedding English, Maths and Digital in T Level Delivery’ and ‘Enhancing Pedagogy for T Levels’. Finally, Chris Rowe, from Navigate, did skills training on how to use Navigate.

Our staff finished the day with Health and Wellbeing sessions at the marketplace, where staff and students created workshops to help with skills. We had pin making, truffle making, mental health support, flower arranging and social media training. Our Esport department created a gaming station for staff and there was support from our Hair and Beauty department to braid hair. Finally, our Motor Vehicle department was there to help with any car troubles and general maintenance of vehicles.

Dan Duke, our Training, Learning and Development Manager, said that;

“The Education Encompassed conference offered a valuable platform for our educators to explore innovative pedagogical approaches, technology integration, and strategies for wellbeing. It was amazing to see the diverse range of perspectives, interactive sessions and the highly successful marketplace activities.

The conference successfully fostered a collaborative and inspiring atmosphere, where our educators could share ideas, learn from each other and some of our learners to envision innovative approaches to teaching and learning”.

Thank you to all our staff, students and visitors for taking part in this day.
