New Advanced Learner Loans give you the opportunity to qualify now and pay later! You can now steam ahead with your qualifications and career development, without having to worry about financial pressures.

You can apply for an Advanced Learner Loan to help with either the full cost or part cost of a training course if you are aged 19 or older. Although loans have to be paid back you won’t have to pay anything back until you earn at least £21,000 a year!

Are you eligible?

  • Aged 19 or over (24 or over if your course begins before 1 August 2016) on the first day of your course (there’s no upper age limit)
  • Living in the UK on the first day of your course and have lived in the UK, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man for three years immediately before this unless you meet one of the exceptions detailed in the ‘Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) – Learners’
  • Studying with a college or training organisation in England approved for public funding
  • Enrolling on an eligible course at Level 3 to 6 (Level 3 or 4 only if your course begins before 1 August 2016) which includes A levels, Access to HE Diplomas and other Vocational Qualifications.

Loans are not means tested or subject to credit checks and if you meet the criteria above you will be able to apply for a loan irrespective of your current employment status or any benefits you receive. These loans do not cover Degrees or other forms of Higher Education (HE). How to apply

You will need to initially apply for the course and specify that you intend to pay with an Advanced Learning Loan.  Once you have been interviewed and offered a place on the course, we will provide you with a Learning and Funding Information Letter (also known as an Offer Letter).

Upon receipt of your Learning and Funding Information Letter, you will apply for the loan through the Student Finance England website. For a loan application form and more information on Advanced Learner Loans visit

The loan amount will be paid directly to the college on your behalf to meet the costs of the course fees.

Learners won’t have to pay anything back until they’ve finished their course and are earning over £21,000 a year (which is £404 a week or £1,750 a month). Repayments are linked to what the learner earns, not what they owe; they pay back 9% of the money they earn over £21,000. Repayments are taken directly from the learner’s wages through the tax system and they can make voluntary repayments at any time.

If you are aged 19 years and over you may be entitled to a 19+ Bursary to to support you with your course related costs.
