The hair and beauty sector is ideal for those who have a creative flair, enjoy helping people look and feel good about themselves and have a passion for keeping up with the latest trends.

Beauty Therapist

Average salary - £16,000 to £25,000*

Beauty therapists provide face and body treatments to help clients look and feel better.

Day to day tasks:

Give a facial by cleansing, massaging and toning a client’s skin, do a makeover by applying and advising on make-up, shape eyebrows and colour eyelashes, give a manicure, pedicure or other nail treatment like extensions and nail art, remove unwanted facial and body hair, do non-surgical skin improvement treatments, offer ultraviolet (UV) treatments and spray tanning.*

Working environments:

You could work in a salon, at a health spa, on a cruise ship, in a hotel or from home. You may need to wear protective clothing.*

Hairdresser

Average salary - £19,000 - £30,000*

Hairdressers and barbers cut, shave, colour and style customers' hair.

Day to day tasks:

Talk to customers and discuss styling ideas, wash, cut and style hair, apply colours, tints, braids and hair extensions, trim and shape beards and moustaches, order stock, take payments and make appointments.*

Working environments:

You could work in a salon, at a client’s home, at a health spa, at an adult care home, on a cruise ship or in a barbershop. Your working environment may be physically active.*
