Award in Introduction to Programming

This course is designed for adults who want to take their first step into programming and digital technology. You will build confidence with core programming ideas, learn how code is structured, and begin creating simple solutions to set tasks. The course is suitable for beginners and supports progression into further digital and IT study.

You will develop introductory programming knowledge and practical digital skills, including:

  • Understanding how programming is used in real life
  • Writing and testing simple code
  • Using logical, sequence, selection and repetition
  • Solving basic problems through programming tasks
  • Developing confidence in digital and technical terminology

Develop your programming skills through practical learning and tutor support, including:

  • Hands-on learning in a supportive adult environment
  • Staff with digital and computing experience
  • A course designed for beginners
  • A clear step into further digital and IT qualifications

There are no formal entry requirements. This course is suitable for beginners. Basic literacy, numeracy and a willingness to learn are helpful.

Average salary - £18,000 to £40,000*

Web Designers use their creative and technical skills to design new websites and redesign existing ones.

Day to day tasks:

Take a lead in maintaining and developing a website, attend meetings with clients to plan and develop website style and appearance, use content management systems (CMS), analyse statistics about who is using the website, write reports for managers, clients and partners, report technical problems to IT support staff.*

Software Developer

Average salary - £30,000 - £75,000*

Software developers create and test programs that allow people to complete tasks, run services and use digital devices.

Day to day tasks:

Discuss client requirements and potential development ideas, work with a technical team to form design plans and timescales, write or update computer code, test software at each stage or iteration to find and fix problems, make sure software meets industry quality standards, record changes made, with reasons, at each stage of development, complete final checks before a product is released for use, maintain and support systems once they’re up and running.*
