Striking Gold: The Flexible Path to World-Class Kickboxing for Harvey

Finding the right rhythm in education is often the key to unlocking extraordinary potential, Harvey’s journey is a testament to finding the right educational path.

After Harvey and his parents made the crucial decision that mainstream school was not the best fit, choosing instead to pursue Elective Home Education until Harvey came to Dearne Valley College.

Project Based Learning programme

Harvey is currently thriving on our Project Based Learning programme and is preparing to take the next step by moving onto our Motor Vehicle course soon! This flexible and vocational educational path has allowed him to fully dedicate himself to his training and his studies, clearly paying off in spectacular fashion.

For brothers Harvey (16) and Tayler (15) Bowen, what started as a simple way to “get us out of the house” has exploded into a world-class sporting achievement. The brothers recently brought their incredible talents to the global stage, representing Team England at the prestigious ISKA Kickboxing Championship in Brisbane, Australia!

Their dedication is clear

Harvey and Tayler have been in the sport for eight years, diligently training 3-4 times a week with The Combat Academy at Barugh Green. It took five years of hard work and commitment before they began competing 3-4 years ago, inspired by watching professional fighters. Their local club sent a strong contingent of approximately 14 competitors plus three dedicated coaches to Australia to support their success.

While preparing for the competition – which included a 10-day trip to Australia and a weigh-in day – the boys knew they would be facing world-class talent from 6-8 other countries!

The brothers battled their way through numerous tough fights at the ISKA World Championships, ultimately achieving an incredible medal haul:

  • Harvey Bowen: Secured three silver medals.
  • Tayler Bowen: Claimed one gold, one silver, and one bronze medal.

Their incredible effort contributed to Team England’s overall success, with the group taking home a phenomenal 50 medals from the event.

For Harvey and Tayler, the experience was truly a once-in-a-lifetime achievement, cementing their status as world-class kickboxers and inspiring others to pursue their passions.

But beyond the sheer pride of this lifetime achievement, the story of Harvey is a potent reminder that success is rarely a straight line. By opting for a flexible and vocational path that honoured his commitment to training, Harvey discovered an educational environment where he could genuinely thrive, proving that when passion and the right framework align, world-class excellence – both in the classroom and on the mat – is always within reach.
