Step Into Spring: May is National Walking Month!

7 May 2026

May has arrived, and with it comes National Walking Month – a UK-wide celebration led by the charity Living Streets.

It’s a time to ditch the four wheels, step outside, and rediscover the simplest, most effective way to boost your health.

Whether it’s a quick 20-minute stroll or a longer hike, walking is more than just a way to get from A to B; it’s a powerful tool for your body and mind.

Why Your Mind Loves a Walk

We often walk to get fit, but the mental health benefits are just as vital. Especially for students juggling deadlines and social pressures, a walk can be a “reset button” for the brain.

  • Natural Stress Relief: Walking reduces levels of cortisol (the stress hormone) and triggers the release of endorphins, which naturally lift your mood.
  • The Power of Green: “Green exercise” – walking in nature – has been scientifically proven to reduce anxiety and help with “brain fatigue,” improving your ability to focus on your studies.
  • A Moment of Mindfulness: Being by the water or under the trees helps pull you out of your head and into the present moment, providing a much-needed break from screens and social media.

Beyond the Mind: The Physical Perks

If the mental boost wasn’t enough, regular walking is a powerhouse for physical health:

  • Heart Health: Even a brisk 10-minute daily walk can lower the risk of heart disease and improve circulation.
  • Better Sleep: Physical activity during the day helps regulate your sleep patterns, meaning you’ll feel more rested for those early morning lessons.
  • Immune Boost: Regular, moderate exercise helps keep your immune system strong, helping you fight off the classic “campus cold”.

Wellbeing Walk at Manvers Lake!

To celebrate National Walking Month, we hosted Wellbeing Walks around Manvers Lake throughout the week.

Manvers Lake is a local treasure that is just down the road from the College, offering a peaceful escape with stunning views and fresh air. These walks are designed to be relaxed, inclusive, and social. It’s the perfect opportunity to meet fellow students, chat with the team, and enjoy the calming atmosphere of the waterfront.

Taking that first step can be the hardest part, but we’re here to make it easy. Come along, breathe in the fresh air, and let’s celebrate National Walking Month together.

Every step counts!
