Worried about GCSE results day? Here’s how we can help
Here’s how we can help
GCSE Results Day is on the horizon and you might already be feeling a mix of emotions.
You might be excited about what’s next. You might be nervous about opening your results envelope. Or you might be wondering what happens if your grades aren’t what you were hoping for.
If any of that sounds familiar, you’re not alone.
Every year, students across the country collect their results and discover that things haven’t gone exactly as planned.
But one thing we want every student to remember is this: Your GCSE results do not define your future.
Your grades are just one part of your story. They don’t measure your determination, creativity, practical skills, resilience or potential. And they certainly don’t determine everything you’ll go on to achieve.
Whatever your results look like on GCSE Results Day, there will be options available and people ready to support you.
If your results aren’t what you expected
It’s completely normal to feel disappointed if your grades aren’t what you hoped for.
Many students put a huge amount of pressure on themselves during exam season, so it can be difficult when things don’t go to plan. But one set of results doesn’t close every door.
In fact, some of the most successful people change direction, take a different route or discover opportunities they hadn’t originally considered.
The important thing is not to panic. Take some time to understand your results, talk to people you trust and seek advice before making any decisions.
You don’t have to figure it out alone
One of the biggest worries students have on GCSE Results Day is not knowing what happens next.
That’s why our teams are available to provide advice, guidance and support throughout the enrolment period.
We’ll take the time to discuss your results with you, understand your goals and ambitions, explore suitable pathways and courses, explain progression opportunities and answer any questions you may have.
Depending on your results and career goals, you may be able to:
- Progress onto your chosen course at a different level
- Explore a different course that better suits your interests or grades
- Consider a vocational qualification or T Level
- Apply for an apprenticeship
- Access additional support to help you achieve your goals
Whatever that next step looks like, you don’t have to make big decisions on your own, and you don’t have to have everything figured out straight away.
There is more than one route to success
When people think about post-16 education, A Levels are often the first option that comes to mind.
But they are not the only route available.
For many students, a more practical and career-focused pathway can be a better fit, helping them gain industry experience, develop specialist skills and work towards their future career goals.
The right path isn’t always the one you originally planned, and that’s okay.
At our Colleges, we work with students following a wide range of pathways, including:
T Levels
If you’re looking for a qualification that combines classroom learning with real industry experience, a T Level could be the right choice.
Designed in partnership with employers, T Levels help students develop the technical knowledge and practical skills needed for their future careers while completing a substantial industry placement.

Apprenticeships
Want to earn while you learn?
Apprenticeships allow you to gain real workplace experience, develop professional skills and achieve recognised qualifications while receiving a wage.
For many students, they offer a direct route into employment and long-term career progression.

Full-Time Vocational Programmes
Not everyone learns best through traditional academic study.
Vocational programmes focus on developing practical skills, industry knowledge and hands-on experience that employers value. They can lead to employment, apprenticeships, higher-level study and a wide range of careers across different sectors.

Project-Based Learning
Not every student is ready for the same next step after Year 11, and that’s okay.
Some learners benefit from a more personalised approach, additional support or a different style of learning.
Our project-based learning programme provides a supportive environment for young people with social, emotional and mental health needs (SEMH) who may not yet be ready for a full-time study programme or are at risk of dropping out of college.
Learners embark on practical, outdoor-based projects over an 18-week period to help them build confidence, independence and employability skills.
For many learners, this acts as an important stepping stone towards further study, training or employment. At the end of the programme, students create their own three-year learning plan of the goals they want to achieve during their time at college and tailored support plans are put in place to help them work towards those goals.

FLEX Pathways for Learners with EHCPs
Students with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) may benefit from specialist support through our FLEX department.
Programmes such as Horizons, Pre-Internships and Supported Internships help learners develop independence, life skills and employability skills while working towards their individual goals.
Our teams work closely with students, parents, carers and support professionals to ensure learners access the pathway that is right for them.
Looking beyond college
Results Day isn’t just about your next year of study. It’s about building a pathway towards your future career.
For some students, that future could include progressing onto higher education qualifications that are closely linked to industry and employment.
We offer a range of higher-level vocational qualifications, including:
- Higher National Certificates (HNCs)
- Higher National Diplomas (HNDs)
- Foundation Degrees
- Higher Technical Qualifications (HTQs)
- Bachelor’s and Masters Degrees
- HN Flex modular learning at levels 4-7
These programmes are designed to help students develop specialist knowledge and career-focused skills, often with strong links to employers and industry. So while the route may look different from a traditional academic pathway, the opportunities can be just as exciting.

Additional Learning Support every step of the way
Starting college can feel like a big change, especially if you’ve found aspects of school challenging or know you’ll need extra support to achieve your goals.
Our Additional Learning Support teams work with students across a wide range of courses and programmes, helping them overcome barriers to learning and build confidence throughout their college journey.
Support is tailored to individual needs and may include:
- Specialist support for students with SEND
- Maths and English coaching for GCSE resits
- Study skills and organisation support
- In and out of class learning support
- Assistive technology and adapted resources
- Exam access arrangements
- Support with confidence, independence and transition into college
Many students who access learning support are surprised by how much of a difference it can make. Having the right support in place can help learners feel more confident, make progress towards their goals and get the most out of their college experience.
If you think you may need additional support, our teams will be happy to discuss your needs and help identify the support available to you.

What happens after results day?
Following Results Day, students will be invited to attend their in-person enrolment appointments.
This is an opportunity to:
- Confirm your course
- Have your results checked
- Receive your timetable
- Collect your student ID card
- Speak to staff about any questions or concerns
If your plans have changed after receiving your results, don’t worry. There may still be alternative courses or progression routes available that are more appropriate for you and your goals.
Still unsure about your next step?
Not everyone has their future mapped out on Results Day.
Some students decide to change course. Others discover a different pathway that suits them better. Some simply need a little more time and guidance before making a decision.
That’s why we’ll also be holding a Late Enrolment Day on Tuesday 1st September.
This event is open to students who haven’t applied yet, want to discuss changing course, missed the main enrolment period or need guidance following their results
Our teams will be available to provide advice and help you find the right option for your future.
Register to attend Late Enrolment Day.
Remember the bigger picture
Years from now, you probably won’t remember every grade on your results slip.
What you’ll remember are the skills you developed, the challenges you overcame and the opportunities you chose to pursue.
Success rarely follows a perfectly straight line. Everyone’s journey looks different, and there is more than one way to achieve your goals.
So whether you’re celebrating, reconsidering your options or still deciding what comes next, remember that your results are important, but they are not the whole story.
Your future is still full of possibilities, and we’re here to help you take the next step.
