Students Calm Space During Stressful Exam Periods
This week marks the start of GCSE examinations, a period often accompanied by heightened stress and anxiety for students.
Coinciding with Mental Health Awareness Week, we recognised the crucial need to provide a supportive and nurturing environment for our young learners. Our vibrant social space was transformed into a haven of tranquillity, with music playing and hosting a series of wonderful wellbeing events designed to help students unwind and recharge.
Throughout the day, students embraced the opportunity to step away from their revision notes and engage in a variety of creative and mindful activities. The gentle focus required for bracelet making and crafting scoobies offered a welcome distraction, while the tactile nature of stress ball creation provided a tangible way to release tension. Mindful drawing allowed students to express themselves in a non-verbal way. The sensory experience of sand trays offered a soothing and grounding activity.
Our dedicated Personal Development Coordinators and Wellbeing Mentors were present throughout these sessions, offering a reassuring presence and a listening ear. They provided valuable guidance, support, and a safe space for students to talk about any worries or anxieties they might be experiencing. Their expertise and compassionate approach were invaluable in fostering a sense of calm and connection.
“It really helped me take a break and feel less overwhelmed. especially with the GCSE exam tomorrow, it’s been nice to do something fun!” – Student attendee.
Meet our therapy dog Rufus!
Adding an extra layer of comfort and joy to the morning before the first GCSE exam there was a very special visitor: our support dog, Rufus! His gentle demeanour and calming presence had a remarkable effect on the students.
The simple act of spending a few moments in his company provided a much-needed dose of relaxation and helped to ease pre-exam nerves before they headed into the exam hall.
It’s important to prioritise your well-being while studying. Remember to schedule time for relaxation and activities that help you unwind. Taking care of your mental health is just as crucial as your academic work.
If you ever feel like you need someone to talk to, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the dedicated support staff available on campus – they’re there to help!
