Painting the Campus Purple for World Cancer Day

6 February 2026

On this World Cancer Day, Dearne Valley College didn’t just show up, we showed up in every shade of purple imaginable!

To support the incredible work of Weston Park Cancer Charity, students and staff across all our sites joined forces for a ‘Wear it Purple’ takeover that proved exactly how much we can achieve when we come together.

From the moment the event started, the atmosphere was nothing short of electric. It wasn’t just about the fundraising: it was about the shared spirit of a community united for a cause that touches so many of our lives.

Our College was buzzing with activity, offering something for everyone. Whether you were looking for a sweet treat or a chance to get back at a tutor, the variety of events was staggering:

  • We had classic activities like a big bake sale that kept everyone fuelled, while our tombola table and ‘Guess the Name of the Bear’ stations had people testing their luck all day!
  • Our talented students and staff offered face painting, and we had a photo booth set up to capture the best purple outfits and fancy dress of the day.
  • A huge shout-out to our Animal Care department, whose photography contest showcased some truly adorable pets.
  • The sounds of Karaoke echoed through the social space, bringing out vocal talent from students and staff alike!
  • There was a fabulous chocolate hamper to be won by guessing how many bolts were in a jar from Motor Vehicle

Perhaps the most popular event of the day was the Sponge the Tutor stand outside. It was truly a sight to see our staff volunteering to take a sponge to the face for charity. The line was long; the laughter was constant. It perfectly captured the all-in attitude that defined the entire event.

While the activities were a blast, the true impact was felt in the atmosphere. Seeing the sea of purple across every department was a powerful reminder of our collective empathy. The feedback from both students and staff has been overwhelmingly positive, with many describing the day as heartwarming and inspiring.

We are thrilled to announce that together we raised a grand total of £1422.66!

A massive thank you to everyone who, baked, sang, wore purple, or threw a sponge, or just showed up. Your generosity will make a real difference to the lives of those supported by Weston Park.
