Happy 9th Birthday, Rufus: Celebrating Dearne Valley College’s Beloved Therapy Dog!
This week, we’re wagging our tails in celebration because our very own four-legged friend, Rufus the therapy dog, is turning 9 years old!
As he celebrates this milestone, it’s the perfect time to look back at the journey that brought this amazing, furry companion to the heart of Dearne Valley College.
A therapy dog for our campus
The incredible initiative to bring a therapy dog to our campus began with a moment of chance at one of the world’s most famous dog shows. In March 2023, Katie, one of our dedicated student wellbeing mentors, attended Crufts. It was there she discovered the stand for Pets as Therapy.
Inspired by their mission, Katie approached them with a spontaneous question: Would they ever consider having a dog visit a college? They confirmed it was something they could absolutely do, and the wheels were immediately set in motion.
In April 2023, Katie completed the application and all the necessary paperwork. The process was swift, and by May 2023, Rufus was officially approved as a therapy dog for DVC!
With Rufus approved, Katie was put in touch with his owner, Joanne. Joanne’s heartfelt story about Rufus is one she loves to share: she acquired him from neighbours who were moving, and to this day, she affectionately calls him “The best free gift they’ve ever got.” While that gift was initially a family pet, he quickly proved he had a profound gift for helping others.

Before becoming an official member of the campus community, Rufus and Joanne came in for a crucial visit. They took a tour to see the layout, understand the environment, and ensure Rufus would feel safe and settled among the hustle and bustle of student life.
Once the necessary risk assessments were completed, his trial began: helping students during the stress of exam season.
Rufus made his debut during the 2023 GCSE exams, and his calming presence was an instant hit, providing a much-needed break and dose of unconditional love for anxious students.

What exactly makes Rufus so invaluable to our College?
The sheer act of petting a dog can lower blood pressure, release stress-reducing hormones, and simply provide a moment of joy and mindfulness away from academic pressures. He’s not just a cute face; he’s a vital tool for mental health support.
We regularly gather anonymous feedback from students who have interacted with Rufus using our dedicated QR code. The overwhelming response speaks volumes about the positive impact he has on their well-being.
Here are a few anonymous quotes we’ve received from students
