Apprenticeship – Dontai

28 February 2025

Level 3 Motor Vehicle Apprenticeship

Here is what Dontai had to say about his experience…

What sparked your interest in motor vehicle, and what pushed your decision to pursue an apprenticeship in it?

“I always had an interest in mechanical systems and how they worked, and I couldn’t imagine myself doing anything else.”

The hands-on training that comes with apprenticeships allows students to hone their skills in a practical environment, building their confidence and expertise.

For someone passionate about their chosen career path such as Dontai, this opportunity to truly master their craft can be incredibly rewarding.

“Dearne Valley College is the best college I’ve gone to.”

Can you describe your experience in the apprenticeship program so far?

“I had a very negative experience when I first started my course as I started at a different college, and they did not have good facilities for me to learn in. However, Dearne Valley College is the best college I’ve gone to.”

Dontai also highlighted that a significant advantage of pursuing this apprenticeship is the ability to learn how to repair his own car. This knowledge helps him save on labour costs since he no longer has to pay for repairs.

The practical and technical skills he is acquiring through both his work and college are positively impacting his personal life as well as his career.

How has the combination of on-the-job training and classroom learning worked for you?

It works really well because at work you are always on the go doing hands-on manual labour and in college you study the theoretical side of the job. I work 4 days a week and I’m at college 1 day a week. Then the weekends are my time for myself.’

So, this work and study arrangement proves remarkably effective, creating a productive synergy between practical experience and theoretical knowledge, equipping students with the skills and experience they need to succeed in their chosen field.

What advice would you give to someone considering doing this apprenticeship?

“Go for it as long as you have an interest in mechanics. Always listen and be prepared to learn cause everyday you learn something new. Also be polite to all customers and colleagues and treat everyone with respect.”

What are the advantages of doing an apprenticeship?

Dontai discovered the benefit of getting paid while he learned. The experience isn’t just about earning; it became a masterclass in patience. He’s learned the vital skill of observation before committing to any task, especially a new job.

This period of careful consideration proved invaluable, empowering him to avoid rushing into situations unprepared and enabling him to make more informed decisions about the jobs he picked up.

“You get paid for your learning and I have learned how to be more patient and to always be observant before you jump into a job.”
