Animal Care – Lilia
T Level: Animal Care and Management
What are your top strategies for managing your time and making sure you don’t burn out?
Lilia is the epitome of dedication! While currently excelling in our T Level Animal course, she impressively balances her work placement, a part-time job, and even finds time in her busy schedule to train dogs in dog agility.Â
Lilia has also competed in Crufts 4 times, and she was a part of the GB team, which are both huge accomplishments!
‘I don’t have a strategy, but I take time out to treat myself as well as decompress. I also try to separate work and relaxation time. When I feel overwhelmed, I like to walk the dogs or train the dogs to help refocus on the task.’
Where does your strong work ethic come from?
‘I have always been taught by my parents and my grandparents that if I want to do things, then I need to work hard and achieve them, as no one would do it for me.’
Lilia has excellent self-awareness regarding her work style. She finds that clear structure and knowing precisely what needs to be done significantly boost her concentration and productivity, ensuring she stays focused and on task.
How have you found the transition between Animal Care Level 3 and moving onto the T Level? Â
‘Level 3 started out more practical, but it was followed by theory-based learning. Whereas T Level is more theory initially then we focus on the practical sessions later.’
The T Level’s focus on practical, hands-on learning and placement hours is a core feature. When asked about the difference in placement hours compared to the Level 3 Animal Course, Lilia noted that her existing high-commitment work ethic meant she had always completed substantial placement time, giving her a real advantage and making the adjustment to the T Level’s quite smooth.
Lilia“Lilia has competed in Crufts 4 times, and she was a part of the GB team, which are both huge accomplishments!”
You’ve done placements in several different areas. What are the different placements and companies you have worked for?
‘Dreams, Wagz Hydrotherapy and Day Care Centre, Babworth Animal Rescue Kennels and finally current placement is Holmelea Hydrotherapy.’
Lilia’s background in animal care – having always been around horses, cats, and dogs – has given her a significant advantage. This prior experience ensured she started her placement with confidence and a full understanding of the practical tasks and effort required.
People might not see a connection, but what transferable skills have you gained from working part-time?
Lilia’s job at Burger King provides valuable, transferable skills. Her regular cleaning duties translate directly to her placement, preparing her for the essential hygiene and sanitation tasks, such as thoroughly cleaning animal enclosures.
Working at a service station location exposes her to a diverse customer base, significantly enhancing her communication skills as she interacts effectively with people from many different backgrounds and nationalities – a crucial asset in any role.
What is your ultimate career goal now that you’ve had such wide-ranging experience, and how is the T Level helping you get there?
While Lilia ultimately dreams of owning a mini farm or a varied collection of animals, she is currently focused on exploration. She has deliberately sought out many different placements in various industries to determine which area of animal care is her ideal career path, leaving her immediate next steps after college wonderfully open to possibilities.
What advice would you give to someone who is considering moving onto a course in Animal Care?
‘To make sure they are passionate about animals, and to have a lot of patience.’Â
Anyone interested in studying animal care must be ready to embrace every necessary aspect of the job. While the rewards are great, the role extends far beyond petting and play; it requires a strong commitment to the essential, practical duties.
