How to Make Friends in Your First Term of College
Starting college can feel like a fresh start – new courses, new teachers, and most importantly, new people.
For many, it’s the first time stepping away from school and into a much bigger, more independent environment. It’s exciting, but it can also feel a bit daunting if you don’t know anyone yet. The good news? Everyone’s in the same boat, and there are loads of easy ways to make friends in your first term.
Here are some tips to help you build connections and feel more settled:
1. Start with “hello”
It might sound simple, but a smile and a quick “hi” to the person sitting next to you in class can go a long way. Chances are, they’re just as keen to make friends as you are. Don’t overthink it, little conversations about the course, teachers or even what you’re having for tea that night can help break the ice.
2. Join clubs and societies
Most colleges offer a range of extracurricular activities, from sports teams and performing arts groups to debate clubs and gaming societies. Joining one is a great way to meet people with similar interests outside of the classroom.

3. Say yes to social events
Freshers’ fairs, student nights, or just grabbing lunch with classmates – try to say “yes” more often in your first term. These little moments are where friendships often begin.

4. Use your free periods wisely
Instead of heading straight home or sitting on your phone, spend your breaks in common areas or the canteen. Hanging out where other students gather makes it easier to strike up conversations naturally.
5. Be open and approachable
Friendships happen when people feel comfortable around you. Keep your body language relaxed, put your phone away now and then, and show interest in what others are saying.
6. Don’t stress if it takes time
Not everyone finds “their people” in week one, and that’s completely normal. Friendships can take weeks or even months to grow. Be patient, keep putting yourself out there, and you’ll gradually find the right group for you.
College is the perfect chance to start fresh and meet people who share your interests, passions and ambitions. Even if you feel shy or nervous, remember that most others are in the same position – and they’ll probably be glad you made the first move.
