Rotherham is Wonderful: A Local’s Perspective on Local Hotel Hospitality

16 March 2026

When visiting a town like Rotherham, the quality and variety of hotel accommodation can shape a visitor’s experience.

Whether travelling for business, tourism, or academic events, guests typically look for comfortable rooms, good service, and convenient locations. Rotherham’s hotel market ranges from historic country-house hotels to modern chain properties. Recently, the town has also welcomed a new international brand with the opening of the Courtyard by Marriott Sheffield – although located at Catcliffe right off the Parkway – the only Marriott in South Yorkshire!

So our roving reporter has done the hard work for you on what to choose and when with this review which explores several notable hotels in Rotherham, examining their facilities, reputation, and what they offer to different types of guests.

The New Arrival: Courtyard by Marriott Sheffield

One of the most significant recent developments in the local hospitality sector is the opening of the Courtyard by Marriott Sheffield. The hotel opened in December 2025 and represents a major investment of around £20 million in the area.

Located just off the Parkway at Catcliffe, the hotel features 150 rooms designed with contemporary décor using natural colours and wooden accents. Walking in, a wonderful scent greets you alongside facilities which include a fitness centre and the Aspen Restaurant & Bar, which serves meals ranging from Sunday roasts to international dishes. It also has private corporate facilities for workshops and team events as well as an outdoor seating area near the bar.

Its location at the entrance to the Advanced Manufacturing Park (AMP) makes it particularly suitable for business travellers visiting companies in the technology and manufacturing sectors nearby.

From a student perspective, the hotel represents a shift in Rotherham’s tourism offering. International brands like Marriott often bring higher standards of service and design, helping attract visitors who might otherwise stay in nearby cities such as Sheffield. The hotel’s modern style and business facilities also suggest that it is aimed at professionals, conferences, and corporate events rather than budget travellers.

The Historic Option: Hellaby Hall Hotel

For visitors seeking a more traditional experience, Hellaby Hall Hotel provides a very different atmosphere. Originally a17th-century manor house, the building has been converted into a four-star hotel set within landscaped gardens.

The hotel includes a spa, indoor pool, restaurant, and event spaces, making it a popular venue for weddings and celebrations.

Many guests praise the friendly staff, comfortable rooms, and relaxing spa facilities and Hellaby Hall remains one of the most recognisable hotels in the region due to its historic architecture and countryside setting.

The Mid-Range One with a Surprise

Another well-known option is the Holiday Inn Rotherham Sheffield, a four-star chain hotel that appeals to families and business travellers. Guests often highlight the indoor pool, health club, and restaurant with garden views, as well as the reliability associated with the Holiday Inn brand. Our roving reporter says after being a part of two local Chamber events at the hotel that the staff are warm, welcoming, friendly and ensure great customer service.

Chain hotels such as this are attractive because they provide a consistent standard of service. Visitors usually know what to expect in terms of room quality, amenities, and pricing. This reliability can be particularly important for travellers attending conferences or events in the area.

The Budget and Smaller Hotels

Rotherham also has several smaller or budget-friendly accommodation options, including inns and independent hotels such as the The Brentwood Hotel and the Rockingham Arms. These properties often focus on affordable rooms and traditional pub-style hospitality, making them popular with families and short-stay visitors.

While they may not offer the same luxury facilities as larger hotels, they contribute to the town’s hospitality sector by providing accessible accommodation for tourists on a budget.

Overall Impression of Rotherham’s Hotel Scene

Rotherham’s hotel market, although small compared with larger cities, provides a diverse range of options. The opening of the Courtyard by Marriott suggests that the town is gradually expanding its hospitality infrastructure, especially in response to business activity at the Advanced Manufacturing Park.

Overall, Rotherham offers a mix of accommodation styles that cater to different travellers. The arrival of the Courtyard by Marriott Sheffield marks an important step in modernising the town’s hotel sector, while established venues such as Hellaby Hall Hotel continue to provide a traditional and historic experience.

For visitors attending business events, family trips, or short weekend stays, the town’s hotels provide enough variety to meet most needs – although the sector will likely continue to evolve as Rotherham continues to invest in itself and develop economically,  attracting more visitors.
