Plastering Students Travel to York College to Compete in Annual SkillBuild Event

29 May 2019

Level 2 Plastering students, Alex Ellis, Keenan McKie and Louis Beckett, all travelled to York College to participate in the plastering competition of the SkillBuild event.

The SkillBuild event is an annual competition based on technical skills and gives students the ability to showcase their skills at a regional and national level. Students from colleges all over the region travelled to York College to compete against one other.

Competitors are tested not only on their technical abilities, but time management, character and commitment. Competing in events such as SkillBuild can help students build confidence, self-esteem and life skills, as well as an invaluable experience to add to any CV.

The students had been given a plastering brief to complete. Alex, Keenan and Louis were required to board and bead a wall in an allotted time. They then followed this with skimming, bonding and finally fixing panel moulds onto a wall.

Stephen Blythe, plastering lecturer at Dearne Valley College said “the students worked really hard competing on the day. Being involved with such a highly reputable competition will be invaluable for developing their career aspirations once they leave College. I’m really proud of how well they all did.”

Alex, Keenan and Louis will find out the results of the competition soon. The highest scoring competitors overall will be invited to take part in the UK National Final. From this, there may be the potential to be selected to represent the UK and compete at an international level.
