This course is designed for those who are interested in a career in Animal Care and land-based related sectors. You will acquire and develop generic, transferable and care-specific skills in order to complete tasks and demonstrate a level of achievement that enables you to progress to your chosen progression route.You will complete a range of animal care, land-based and horticulture- related units, study an appropriate English and maths qualification and develop transferable employability and communication skills. You will engage in our new exciting ‘Market Gardens and Retail Outlet’ project in which you will grow seasonal fruits and vegetables for sale in our Dearne Valley College shop.
You will undertake a programme of study with one main qualification:
City and Guilds Entry Level 3 Certificate in Skills for Working Life Land and Plant
Students work in the Horticulture facilities and will develop both knowledge and practical skills in:
- Horticulture
- Recognising parts of plants
- Harvesting a crop
- Inserting plant material
- Controlling weeds in a planted area
- Watering plant material by hand
- The programme also incorporates health and safety units.
City and Guilds Entry Level 3 Certificate in Skills for Working Life – Animal Care
Students work in the Animal Management Centre and will develop both knowledge and practical skills in:
- Animal husbandry
- Health checking a small animal
- Assisting with catching and restraining a small animal for grooming
- Students will work primarily with dogs, cats, rabbits and chickens, but will also have the opportunity to work with rodents and other species
- The programme also incorporates health and safety units.
Both Pathways will include:
- English and Maths qualifications to develop skills for further progression and employability.
- You will take part in activities and visits with land-based employers such as Wildlife Trusts and Heritage sites to help you make choices about your future career
- You will develop other skills such as employability and teamwork
- We have great employer links with Manvers Lake and the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust for trips and guest speakers.
- Work experience with the Animal Collection and the Market Garden.
No qualifications required.
