Jacob Hunter chose to come to Dearne Valley College to study Foundation Learning after attending Danum Academy and another college.

Jacob chose to come to Dearne Valley College after feeling excluded from a lot of the activities on his previous college course, due to his disability. Both he and his family are very happy with his development throughout the year and how much happier he has been.

As work experience, Jacob has worked on the Reception at Dearne Valley College for five weeks making new friends, assisting people with their enquiries and gaining real-life work experience.

Jacob has been studying money management, bank accounts, how to live and how take care of himself and is looking forward to doing another work placement soon.

During the course, Jacob and his class go on day trips to improve team building skills and to enjoy a change in scenery. This year the class is going to Flamingo Land theme park and zoo, the tutors consider the students’ wants and needs in the planning stages so everyone has an enjoyable trip.

Jacob’s goal is to move onto the Internship Programme next year, to improve his confidence further and build his self-esteem. Once he has completed the courses, Jacob hopes to become a receptionist or office worker.

Jacob says, “I feel much more supported and have opened up more here. I get involved in sports now, as they adapt the activities to enable me to join in. I just love it here; we have a great laugh.”
