Michael is a former Dearne Valley College Sport student that since studying has become a self-employed Sport and Exercise Consultant.
Michael’s role can vary depending on the client or athlete he works with, from personal training, strength and conditioning work, and teaching and consultancy work for businesses. He said, “Working in the sport and exercise industry, every day is different and I get to meet lots of different people, and ultimately I get to help people with their health and fitness.”
Michael began his journey at Dearne Valley College by studying a Level 3 Sport qualification, ultimately progressing onto a Higher National Diploma (HND) and a Certificate in Education. During this time, he was able to develop vital skills in working with groups of all ages, working as part of a team as well as how to manage himself in terms of time management and leadership.
Michael added, “The most beneficial things about gaining my qualifications at Dearne Valley College are that I’ve been able to work in an industry I love for over twenty years and travelling around the country and Europe helping a variety of people. That was one of the main reasons I chose to study at Dearne Valley College; the dedicated sport facilities, friendly and relaxed environment and the great reputation for Sport courses offered here.”
With his in-depth knowledge of the Sports industry, Michael advises to get a broad knowledge of the industry before specialising in one area, and at the same time work hard to achieve your best possible grades, to make a great first impression to any potential employer.
Michael commented “Job opportunities in sport and exercise are huge and is a big business; gyms are everywhere, almost every sports team are wanting sport professionals such as fitness coaches, personal trainers, nutritionists and teachers.
“It doesn’t matter what mistakes you’ve made previously, learn from them and try and make yourself better every day and if you do that, you really can achieve anything.”
