Travel and Tourism Students Celebrate Success

Date: 29/06/2011

Students studying the Foundation Degree in Travel and Tourism Management at Dearne Valley College (DVC) and indeed their tutors are celebrating.

An overall success rate of 85% is remarkable enough, but some individual performances have really raised the bar for future students on this innovative course.

Ethan Strudwick (21) from Barnsley has beaten hundreds of candidates to bag a full-time job with Jet2.com. He has been employed as a member of the ground crew team based at Leeds Bradford Airport.

Daniel Atkinson (20) from Thurnscoe in Rotherham made such a good impression during his two week work placement at stately home Brodsworth Hall, Doncaster  that they have asked him back to work full-time now his studies have ended.

And not to be outdone by the lads, Alicja Gellert (28) originally from Poland, but now living in Barnsley has won the Sheffield Hallam University Academic Achiever Award at the college’s recent Student Awards 2011 celebration.

Andy Birch, Foundation Degree Programme Manager commented:

“I am delighted for the students. At a time when young people come in for so much criticism it is heart warming to see what they can achieve with hard work and dedication. They deserve praise and recognition. We started this course two years ago in partnership with Leeds Met so this is the first set of students to finish and I couldn’t be more proud of what they’ve achieved. The aim of the course is to help students get into university, to see some leave with full-time jobs is an added bonus”.

Many of the Foundation Degree students have decided to continue their studies and several of them have already had places confirmed at universities such as Leeds Met, Sheffield Hallam, Loughborough and Derby universities where they will complete Bachelor of Arts Degrees in Travel and Tourism Management.

Dearne Valley College are now accepting applications for many vocational courses starting September 2011.
