Date: 31/05/2013

Barnsley Football Clubs mascot, Toby Tyke, became a VIP visitor, when representatives from the club visited the Wath-based College to promote opportunities available with them in collaboration with the National Citizen Service (NCS).

The NCS is a campaign aimed at providing 16 to 17 year olds with opportunities to develop invaluable skills and make new friends, using residential trips, activities and community projects. Barnsley football club are hosting a project under the NCS, in which students will have the opportunity to work with staff at the local club to plan a ‘social action project’ for the local community, which they will then deliver.

Alongside this, Dearne Valley College are offering a number of other opportunities including a residential trip to the Pioneer centre in Shropshire which will involve Kayaking, Archery and Caving, and a seven-day challenge activity at the Kingswood centre in Penistone, with activities such as creative arts, leadership and independent learning.

Speaking about the opportunities on offer to their students, Learning and Progress Manager at Dearne Valley College, Louise Hague, said:
“We are excited to offer these once-in-a-lifetime opportunities to our students that will hopefully encourage their positive participation within sports, activities and community projects. They will benefit from a whole host of new skills and abilities, an opportunity to build new friendships and add valuable new assets to their CV’s”
