TASTE OF MOTOR MECHANICS

Date: 17/07/2012

A group of youngsters from Wingfield School, Rotherham have taken part in a motorsports taster day at Dearne Valley College (DVC).

The group of Year 9 pupils spent the day at the Wath-based College to help raise awareness and knowledge of Further Education opportunities available after completing compulsory education.

The group of ten pupils, along with two support workers got a flavour of the excellent facilities and the vocational courses on offer. The pupils were given an insight into college life should they choose a course in the future after taking their GCSEs.

Activities which the group under took included; two stroke engine component identification, bike component identification - suspension, chassis, engine, transmission, wheels and tyres and exhaust systems, transmissions and working out gear ratios with drive trains, they also removed the exhaust systems from mini-motor bikes whilst remembering the importance of following instruction correctly.

Darren Whitworth, DVC Motorsports Tutor, commented:
“The Wingfield pupils really enjoyed the taster session along with their support workers, whilst learning new skills. The practical tasks were supported with Maths, English and ICT skills. The mini-motor bikes went down a storm, they gave instant reaction and the wow that we wanted to achieve, the bikes kept focus which kept the learners engaged at all times. The feedback from the session was marked as super cool or ‘fantastic”.

The Engineering and Technology department are able to offer a road show service and take the motorsports taster session into schools or other learning environments. The session can be tailor made to suit any type of session for many varied learners.

Dearne Valley College are accepting applications for many vocational courses including; Motor Vehicle Mechanics, Motorsport, Motor Vehicle Body Repair, Welding, Design and  Engineering  courses  all starting in September 2012.
