Students Raise Over £1000 with Charity Bikeathon!

Date: 17/07/2014

Students and staff from Rotherham-based Dearne Valley College took part in a gruelling 26-mile bike ride and braved some typically British, miserable weather to raise funds for the Sheffield Children’s Hospital and their #MakeitBetter campaign.

The participants, from the College’s Sports, Public Services and Travel & Tourism departments, kitted themselves out in the charity’s blue and yellow colours and welcomed the Hospital’s giant teddy mascot, Theo, to launch the event. The lengthy route began at the College’s Manvers campus and took the DVC team through Worsbrough, Penistone and Dunford Bridge, covering some of the Transpennine trail, and reaching Woodhead Pass. The fundraisers had to brave torrential downpours throughout the trail, before reaching the anticipated endpoint, where the participants camped over night.

Sports Tutor, John Lund said: “We are very proud of our students and also the staff who volunteered and committed themselves to such a physical and mental challenge despite the adverse weather conditions, all in aid of raising money for their chosen charity.”

Sponsorship money is still pouring in and the team are already over their whopping £1000 milestone. Part of the funds raised will also be donated to the Parkinsons Foundation.

The College is still accepting applications for courses such as Sports, Public Services and Travel & Tourism, among many others, which allows students to take advantage of fantastic opportunities such as these charity events.
