Students from Dearne Valley College (DVC) have been prepared for entering the world of work thanks to a week of advice and guidance.

The Wath-based College hosted Employability and Careers Week to ensure its students are prepared for what is expected of them when applying for jobs.

Various activities took place during the week including an Employers Question Time panel. The college invited local employers to answer questions from students about the recruitment and selection process. Students heard firsthand what employers look for in an applicant’s CV and picked up hints and tips for when applying for vacancies.

Question Time panel members included representatives from; South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Technical Fire Safety Central Support, Rotherham Youth Enterprise, Holiday Inn and Coalfields Regeneration.

Volunteering Day gave students the chance to learn about volunteering opportunities and the positives from offering a little bit of time and support. Agencies that took part included; Rotherham Samaritans, Lighthouse and Miracle, High Hopes Riding for the Disabled and Dearne Valley Special Olympics and Rotherham NHS Hospital amongst others.

Job clubs offering: CV writing skills workshops, job search techniques, mock interviews, and tips for filling in job application forms and careers advice were also available to students.

Rotherham Youth Enterprise, Job Centre Plus and South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Technical Fire Safety Central Support answered questions from students about employment opportunities as part of a meet the employer session.

Laura Schofield, DVC Careers Advisor commented:
“Employability and Careers Week aims to familiarise students with varying careers and to assist them with all aspects of the recruitment process. The sessions were intended to help prepare them for progression from education to employment. I would like to thank all the employers and organisations who participated in Employability and Careers week for sharing their expertise with our students”.

Sessions on further and Higher Education (HE) routes were also arranged with the college’s own Career Advisors to discuss progression opportunities.
