Rotherham Colleges Launch Joint Campaign to Inform Local Students!

Date: 19/06/2013

Dearne Valley College, Rotherham College and Thomas Rotherham College have joined forces to show parents and guardians that the new ‘Raising Participation Age’ doesn’t mean that staying on at school is the only option.

70% of 16-18 year olds in Rotherham go to college rather than staying on at school*

Rotherham’s young people, who are currently in Y11, will be required to be in full-time education, on an apprenticeship or in employment with training until they reach 17 years of age.  The three colleges, all located in Rotherham, are working tirelessly to ensure Rotherham’s young people have access to impartial careers education, information, advice and guidance to help pursue the best route for their future career.

Targeted at parents and guardians of Rotherham’s young people, the three institutions have launched 15 fascinating facts which aim to dispel some of the myths around college study and highlight that there are different routes available under the Government’s ‘Raising Participation Age’ agenda. The campaign showcases the wealth of opportunities available to Rotherham’s young people at the age of 16, in the local area.

It is imperative that at 16, young people make the right choice about their learning journey. For some, staying at school might be the best route; however for many apprenticeships, vocational courses or A-levels at a post-16 college could be an opportunity to make the most of their talents and help them achieve their career aspirations.

Over the next few weeks, the key facts will be displayed throughout the region on colourful billboards and phone booths. A radio campaign will also take to the airwaves of Hallam, Dearne and Rother stations. It is hoped that the campaign will ultimately stress, to parents and guardians, the importance of seeking impartial information, advice and guidance when it comes to careers education.
