Local sports student Lewis Billam is reaching for new heights.
Sports student, Lewis (16) currently studying at Dearne Valley College (DVC) is a pole vaulter with the South Yorkshire youth pole vaulting team.
Lewis from Bolton upon Dearne, Rotherham has competed in numerous events and has a number of forthcoming tournaments coming up in England and Europe.
Lewis has been training since the age of 13 taking part in athletics and sprinting but soon had an interest in pole vaulting and showed he was eager and able to compete. At the age of 13 he was selected to represent the South Yorkshire youth pole vaulting team.
Training 3 days a week for a total of 9 hours with Trevor Fox, Lewis trains at the English Institute of Sport, Sheffield around his study commitments.
Currently studying the Level 3 BTEC National in Sport and Physical Recreation at the Wath based college Lewis puts the theory he learns, into practise. Units studied so far include; Nutrition, Human Performance, Antimony and Physiology - all proving valuable to his physical training schedule.
Lewis Billam commented:
“My immediate aim is to continue my studies at DVC and then study the Foundation Degree in Sports Coaching at the college with a view to going to university. My other ambition is to train hard and compete in various competitions for qualifiers for entry to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games”.
Having already had the opportunity to spend time and train with the GB pole vaulting team, Lewis is currently training and preparing for competing in the Indoor Championships in Manchester, Birmingham and Sheffield.
