Public Service students from Dearne Valley College (DVC) have helped South Yorkshire Police with their public order training scenarios.

The Public Services students from the Wath-based College acted as gang members whilst South Yorkshire Police Officers used new crowd control techniques for training purposes.

Scenarios were staged at the South Yorkshire Police’s training base at Manvers, Rotherham where students regularly visit as part of their course.

The training facilities feature replica public spaces including; shops, premises, houses, football stands, a bar and nightclub. There’s also a mock custody suite and prison cells to show officers techniques once inside a police station.

Nick Lawton, DVC Public Services Tutor commented:
“I would like to say thank you to the South Yorkshire Police for allowing us to be a part of their training exercises. The students have seen firsthand the techniques used by the Police to gain control should difficult circumstances arise. This experience will hopefully prepare our students for the future should they choose a career in the uniformed services”.

As Head of South Yorkshire Police’s Public Order Command and Tactical Training unit, Inspector Adrian McWalter commented:
“It is fantastic that students from Dearne Valley College have assisted my staff with the delivery of our training scenarios. The tactics used by officers on this occasion were in response to recent events that have sadly occurred across the country. The students not only took part in the simulations, they are given a tour of the site and given a presentation by staff from within the department on the complexities faced by Police Officers working on Public Order/Safety events”.

Dearne Valley College are now accepting applications for courses starting September 2012.
