New Programme Refreshes Unemployed Students’ Skills

Date: 03/02/2014

Dearne Valley College is celebrating the completion of a successful pilot programme targeted at local adult learners who have been out of employment for an extended period of time.

The first cohort of mature students on the ‘Adult Workskills’ course commemorated their achievements by organising a small awards ceremony, following by cake and refreshments at the College, attended by Tutors, Directors and the Principal.

The course is an 8-week programme which allows learners to refresh and update vital skills in English, Maths and IT, whilst improving their employability and allows them to try out a choice of the vocational areas offered by the College, such as Building and Construction, Health and Social Care, and Catering.

Having spent four months out of employment before embarking upon the course, 42-year-old mature student, Paul Snowden said:
“On my first day, I really didn’t want to be here and in fact, the reason I came in the first place was due to a referral from the Job Centre. I quickly made friends and started to enjoy attending the course, and as a result I have gained skills in English, Maths and IT, and I am also looking forward to embarking upon further courses such as Food Hygiene.”

Having attended the awards ceremony, Principal and Chief Executive at Dearne Valley College, Martin Harrison said:

“The College’s ‘Adult Workskills’ programme has been designed to lift local individuals out of unemployment and back into training, to support them into further education or employment in the future.“

“It was wonderful to see our first cohort of Workskills students celebrating their successes and positive experiences at Dearne Valley College, and demonstrating their newfound confidence and skills, by organising their own awards ceremony, and I was very proud to be a part of it.”
