Guest Lecture for Sports Students at Sheffield United Training Academy

Date: 14/01/2014

Dearne Valley College’s Sports staff organised an exciting, educational trip for students working towards a Foundation Degree in Sports and Exercise. The Higher Education students visited Sheffield United’s Shirecliffe Training Academy to further their knowledge of sport-related strength and conditioning, and nutrition.

The Higher Education students had the chance to experience a professional training set up and as part of their continued learning, the students took part in a guest lecture at the venue by Sheffield United’s first team Strength and Conditioning Coach, Lee McMahon, and students also took part in a question and answer session with a Master’s Degree sport student who is currently on placement with the club.

As part of the visit, the learners sampled some of the front line technology used to aid the development of the athletes, and also toured the Blade’s elite training facilities, including the state-of-the-art fitness suite where the lectures where held.

Foundation Degree student, Danny Chedgzoy said:

“It was great to be able to visit this type of facility and gain a ‘behind-the-scenes’ experience, especially as Coaching is a career that some of us are considering going into.”

Curriculum Area Leader for Leisure Industries, Adam Nixon said:

“The educational visit to Sheffield United’s Shirecliffe Training Academy proved extremely beneficial in furthering the students’ knowledge of sport-related strength and conditioning, and nutrition, whilst providing them with an invaluable insight into a professional sports environment and a potential career path.”
