Grandma Abson's Traditional Baking Book Launched

Date: 14/06/2011

Baking delights were served to guests as Catering and Hospitality students from Dearne Valley College (DVC) helped a local author launch her new baking recipe book.

The Griffin Restaurant based at the Rockingham Centre in Wath was the venue for the book launch where local author, Meryl White, originally from Bolton upon Dearne, Rotherham launched her new book.

When Meryl’s Grandma, Elizabeth (Lizzie) Abson died in 1977, Meryl collected the recipes written on scraps of paper and in old exercise books and created a booklet of recipes in 1982 which was then distributed through local bookstores. The recent revival of interest in baking prompted her to look again at Grandma’s legacy some 30 years after collating the recipes.

Meryl regularly bakes many of the recipes for her family and friends and has great fun from her passion for home baking.

On the launch day, current Catering and Hospitality students made bakery delights from the recipe book in the training kitchens and then served guests in the Griffin Restaurant.

Meryl White commented:

“Putting Grandma Abson’s Traditional Baking book together has been a real labour of love. I love baking and, better still, my family and friends love eating what I bake. I am delighted that Dearne Valley College were able to host Grandma Abson’s book launch, so close to where she lived and worked. The event was a splendid celebration of traditional baking”.

Meryl’s recipe book will be available from YPD Books and priced at RRP £10.99 per copy.
