Former Dearne Valley College Student Returns as New College ‘Sports Maker’

Date: 08/05/2013

A former sports student who studied for, and completed a range of qualifications with Dearne Valley College, has now returned as the brand new ‘College Sports Maker’. Leading public body,’ Sport England’, is working with further education Colleges to create 150 of these roles across the nation, with the aim of increasing the number of young people who actively participate in sports.

Former student, Nick Gill, invested many years into his studies at Dearne Valley College, completing levels 1 to 5 and embarking upon and successfully achieving a Higher National Diploma in Sport and Exercise Science.

He began his career in Sporting Development with Sheffield City Council, before moving onto a position as a School Games Organiser at a secondary school in Doncaster. He returned to study at Dearne Valley College in 2010 for his Certificate in Education, before taking up the role as College Sports Maker this year.

As part of his new role, Nick will aim to increase and encourage student participation in regular sports and physical activity across College, including the implementation of lunchtime and after-college clubs, inter-College sports leagues and competitions, and intra-college activities also, engaging with fellow further education Colleges in the South Yorkshire region. He will also introduce ‘leadership and officiating academies’ allowing students to take a leading or managerial role in sports, whilst volunteering and gaining valuable qualifications.

Nick will also look towards boosting partnerships with external sporting organisations in the local community and in particular, the College will work with local sports club ‘The Manvers Boathouse’ to increase the use of the club’s excellent water sports provision they have to offer.

Speaking about his move to Dearne Valley College, Nick said:

“It’s great to be back at Dearne Valley College to help students engage in sport and physical exercise, while creating valuable and lasting links with other organisations in the local community.”

“It’s an exciting position to adopt, and the ‘College Sports Maker’ role has the primary aim of increasing the number of 14-25 year olds who are actively and regularly participating in sports and physical exercise, nationally. We have some exciting new ventures in the pipeline that will help us reach this target.”
