Diversity Week at Dearne Valley College

A week of interactive activities to raise awareness about diversity has been hosted by Dearne Valley College (DVC).

The week concentrated on faith, religion, culture, foods, sexual orientation, and disability amongst other issues.

Laura Shepherd, DVC Activities Co-ordinator helped organised the week for students and staff to appreciate and respect other people’s lifestyle choices and situations.

Activities at the Wath based college included; displays about the many different religions, henna hand painting, food sampling of Indian, Chinese, English, Greek and Caribbean dishes were available from the college’s diner.

A hand print pledge that asked students to pledge that they will respect diversity within the college environment was also arranged.

Guest speakers included; Rotherham Youth Service who gave information and guidance on lesbian, gay and bisexual issues. Representatives from MIND, Sheffield New Muslims and the NHS gave talks and offered advice.

Laura Shepherd, DVC Activities Co-ordinator commented:

“Diversity Week aimed to raise awareness of issues surrounding diversity and for students and staff to acknowledge that we are not all the same and to respect people’s choices”.

Dearne Valley College are accepting applications for academic year 2012/2013.
