Date: 08/05/2013

Health and the environment were on the agenda for Dearne Valley College recently, for their latest College ‘theme’ week! The Wath-based College aimed to educate their students on a wide range of issues related to students and their health, diet and the environment around them.

Tutorials were held throughout the week, addressing such topics as ‘nutrition’, ‘first aid’ and ‘HIV Awareness’ and the College also promoted their sports and fitness provision and the benefits of playing regular sport and the up-keep of fitness, to your health. The new ‘College Sports Maker’, Nick Gill, delivered a number of talks throughout the week to promote and encourage participation in sport and fitness across the College.

Health and Environment Week also involved of a range of lunchtime activities for all students. Among these were a number of events, such as the ‘Healthy Alternatives’ competition which challenged the students to come up with a more wholesome substitution for some of their favourite, but less health-friendly foods, as well as competitions to guess the number of calories in a variety of snacks, a quiz to determine the negative effects of smoking and a myth-buster session regarding alcohol. Students also took part in a ‘fastest rower’ competition to see who can reach a particular distance in the quickest time!

A range of health-related freebies were available to College students throughout the week so that they could put their new-found knowledge to practical use, including unit-measurers, calorie calculators and free fruit.

Speaking about the ‘Health and Environment’ theme week, Activities Co-ordinator, Laura Shepherd said:

“Theme weeks are a great way of educating Dearne Valley College on issues outside of their curriculum. We hold these throughout the year addressing a range of topics, with plenty of student interaction, tutorials and competitions across College.

“We hope that the ‘Health and environment week’ helped our students to make the right choices regarding their health, nutrition and alcohol consumption, among others.”
