Dearne Valley College Travel and Tourism Students get Dream Jobs

Date: 15/06/2011

Two Travel and Tourism students from Dearne Valley College (DVC) will be soaking up the sun this summer as they jet out of Britain for their dream summer jobs.

Harley Millns (19) from Greasborough, Rotherham has jetted off to the La Manga Club Hotel in Spain.  Harley will carry out a variety of jobs including; reception, housekeeping, bar and waitressing duties during her time at the hotel - famous for hosting many English Premier League football clubs.

Harley Millns commented:

“I’m so excited to be going out to Spain to work for the summer. I will be able to use the knowledge and experience I have gained whilst studying at Dearne Valley College to the test. I have received fantastic support from my tutors in getting this job”.

Fellow student Tom Pearson (19) from Broom, Rotherham has travelled to Pennsylvania in the USA to work as a Camp America Representative. It has been Tom’s ambition to work in America for many years.

Tom Pearson commented:

“My tutors have helped me finish my studies ahead of schedule so that I could accept this fantastic job for the summer. I am really excited, if a little nervous to be going to live in America for 8 weeks”.

Once Tom returns from America he will be studying the Foundation Degree in Travel and Tourism Management starting in September.

Both students have studied the Level 3 Travel and Tourism course at the Wath based college which is designed to equip young people with the skills and qualifications to work in almost any sector of the Travel and Tourism industry.

Steve Hunt, Travel and Tourism Programme Area Manager commented:

“This is fantastic news and builds on our proud record of helping to get our students into employment. The whole team are delighted for Harley and Tom who represent living evidence of our commitment to raising expectations and widening participation in the local area”.

The college is hosting a summer taster day for local youngsters concentrating on its Business and Travel and Tourism vocational course areas. The taster day is an opportunity to give prospective students hands-on experience and build skills for the future whilst having fun.

Taking place on Tuesday 28 June 2011, from 10.00am until 3.00pm at the Manvers Campus, the day aims to help youngsters still undecided as to what course they want to study after taking GCSEs.

Youngsters will step into the Dragon’s Den as part of the Business Taster which will see them receive a fictional budget and deliver their ideas to a panel of judges to see whose concept will go to market.

Others can take part in a travel and tourism interactive participation activity called DVC-side, which was designed by DVC students for students and is facilitated by students. The DVC-Side concept is for teams to design their own seaside resort by buying buildings and attractions with a fictional budget to promote UK coastal tourism.
