Dearne Valley College Sports Students Host Charity Event in Memory of Former Peer

Date: 13/12/2012

Dearne Valley College’s Sports students, who are currently studying towards either a Community Sports Leaders Award (CSLA) or Higher Sports Leaders Award (HSLA), are hosting a charity football and badminton tournament in memory of former student, Steven Dannatt, who sadly passed away last year.

Steven Dannatt’s family will be in attendance, alongside the entirety of the college’s Level 2 and Level 3 Sports students who have also been invited. The students are also hoping to include the college’s Higher Education Sports students, with most of them having studied alongside Steven during his time as a DVC student, and they are hoping to see a turnout of over 100 students at the event which takes place on the final day of term before the Christmas break.

A memorial tournament of a similar kind was held at the college soon after the tragedy, in aid of raising money for the family’s chosen charity. This year’s students are hoping to follow in its success by hosting a charity football and badminton tournament at the college’s Astroturf and Sports centre facilities. The students are hoping to take advantage of the festive spirits of the attendees in order to celebrate the life of a great friend, all the while raising vital funds for a charitable organisation.

Speaking about the event, Stuart Prentice, who is the students’ tutor and will be overseeing the organisation of the event, said “Our HSLA and CSLA students are really hoping to raise a target amount of £500 for charity in memory of Dearne Valley College student, Steven Dannatt, by arranging this event. It will also account for a part of the assessment for their course, so the students will be working hard to pull it off successfully”.

The students will be charging £2 per ticket and will also be hosting a charity raffle on the day. Ryan Desmond, who runs an independent Lavazzo coffee stand at the college’s Manvers campus will also be in attendance, making coffee, tea and refreshments for attendees and will be donating a percentage of all sales. The organisation and management of this event will also form part of the student’s assessment for their course. The event will take place on the 21st of December, with activities commencing at the college around 11am, and is expected to finish around 3pm. All proceeds will be donated to the Dannatt family’s charity of choice.
