A team of staff from Dearne Valley College (DVC) were crowned as PHASE Worldwide Dragon Boat champions on Sunday 1 July at the Manvers Lake, Wath upon Dearne, Dragon Boat Race.

The team of eleven crew members making up the ‘DVC Griffins’ won the race in competition with thirteen other Dragon Boat Race teams following a day of competitive races.

Gable Events organised the Boat Race for local teams to compete in to help raise money for PHASE Worldwide.

PHASE Worldwide works to improve the lives of remote Himalayan communities. These people are some of the poorest and most disadvantaged in the world as they have little access to basic services like healthcare, education or road transport. PHASE aims to support the most vulnerable: women, children, low castes, the very poor and people with disabilities*.

Over the 200 metre course, DVC Griffins posted the fastest time of the day, of 53 seconds over the lake course in windy conditions.

Ian Philip, DVC Griffins Team Captain, commented:
“A fantastic team performance on the day that showed real DVC grit and team work to win - we got better with each race”.

Dearne Valley College are accepting full-time applications for many vocational courses starting September 2012 and Apprenticeships for immediate employer vacancies.
