The Engineering and Technology department from Dearne Valley College (DVC) is hosting a summer taster session for local youngsters.
The taster session is an opportunity to give prospective students hands-on experience and build skills for the future whilst having fun.
Taking place on Thursday 7 July 2011, from 3.30pm until 5.30pm at the Manvers Campus, the session aims to help youngsters still undecided as to what course they want to study after taking GCSEs.
The Wath based college will be focussing on its engineering vocational course area to promote the new BTEC Diploma in Engineering Level 2 course, starting in September 2011. The course is varied and interesting and will equip students with the skills and knowledge needed to progress onto higher qualifications in the engineering world, which is, a very varied environment covering many denominations of engineering.
Key units on the course will include; Working Safely and Effectively in Engineering, Interpreting and Using Engineering Information, Mathematics for Engineering Technicians, Engineering Maintenance Procedures, Part Programming Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Machines, Application of Welding Processes amongst others.
Participants of the session will have the opportunity to; operate a lathe, milling machine, drilling machine, grinding machine and will also look at, and have a go at, some different types of welding.
Jon Barker, Programme Area Manager for Engineering and Technology commented:
“The summer taster session is aimed at those students who are undecided about which course they want to study after taking GCSEs and would like a flavour of a vocational course area. We hope the taster session will appeal to young people and make us their choice for further education”.
Participants will also have the opportunity to look at the excellent facilities, chat to course tutors and support staff, speak to current full-time students and apply on the day for full-time courses starting September 2011.
Participants should be dressed in old clothes but overalls and boots will be provided.
