Travel and Tourism students from Dearne Valley College (DVC) have hosted a DVC-Side event.

A participation activity designed by students for students and facilitated by students the Level 3 Travel and Tourism students hosted their first event for other students to test drive their activity.

The DVC-Side concept is for teams to design their own seaside resort by buying buildings and attractions with a fictional budget to promote UK coastal tourism. Students took into consideration visitor attractions, hotels, restaurants, amusements in order to make for a successful resort.

In preparation for the event the students from the Wath based college contacted many tourist boards such as Visit Blackpool and Visit Brighton who provided brochures and posters to help with the event.

On the day, nine groups designed their own seaside resort taking inspiration from seaside resorts across the UK. Working together and managing a fictional budget of one million pounds; teams designated a team leader, a finance manager, a PR manager and a team of designers to ensure that UK standards and organisation were met.

The students were then required to present their concepts to the rest of the group, these were then judged in a Dragon’s Den style scenario where the teams had to promote their seaside and say why there’s was the best.

A panel of judges declared a group from Travel and Tourism Level 3 Year 1 the winning team.

Lisa Bramley, DVC Travel and Tourism Tutor commented:

“The students have worked really hard to devise, create and deliver an interactive activity related to their studies. The activity was a huge success and they should be really proud of themselves for delivering a quality event. The students are now hoping the product can be used in schools as a participation and taster event. This event will hopefully develop the students’ financial budgeting and knowledge of UK tourism”.

The winners each received a Meadowhall gift voucher and a certificate.
