College Kicks off New Year with Fresher’s Fayre!

Date: 17/09/2014

Dearne Valley College’s academic year kicked off with a bang, with this year's Wild West-themed Fresher's Fayre! The event, which takes place annually for all new and returning students, featured a wealth of activities such as a bucking bronco, cactus lassoing, table tennis and a western-themed photo booth to capture the event.

A variety of local businesses, charities and organisations also attended to host a stand at the event, providing information and freebies.

Former Dearne Valley College student, Alistair English returned to offer a sweet treat for students, by hosting a stand for his company, Pastures Moo, which provides luxury diary ice cream in a variety of flavours. Representatives from the ‘Giving Blood’ campaign attended to provide information about the benefits of becoming a blood donor, and Sheffield Hallam University came along to speak to students about routes into Higher Education and higher level study.

Alongside these, the event saw representatives from Avon, a young driver’s insurance company, the National Citizens Service, DVC Sports, Dearne Valley College’s Academy of Sport and a variety of other sports organisations, among others.

Learner Involvement Co-ordinator, Emily Senior said:

“Each year we host this event to allow new and returning students to have a fun first week at College, and it’s a fantastic opportunity for them to meet their peers in a social setting before working together in the classroom. It also allows local businesses and organisations to engage with our students, whilst showing them what opportunities and extra-curricular activities are available to them to boost their studies.”

Dearne Valley College is still accepting places for courses beginning in September. For further information, or to apply, contact the Admissions team on 01709 513355, at, or visit the website at
