CLASS DISTINCTION

Date: 09/07/2012

A Construction student from Dearne Valley College (DVC) has gained a distinction for both her brickwork practical project and supporting exams.

Jill Evans (43) from East Herringthorpe, Rotherham has just completed her Level 3 in Brickwork course at the Wath-based college, and has also done well in her Functional Maths.

Having completing Level 2, Jill has recently finished her Level 3 in Brickwork with her 2.5 metre brick twisted pier, with a decorative chap. Using skills and knowledge gained from her course, she designed it herself and made it into a clock tower for her final piece.

Ian Branford, DVC Construction Tutor, commented:
“Jill is a very motivated learner, nothing is too much trouble and she went the extra mile with her studies and is a triumph, not just for herself, but for DVC”.

Jill intends to do further studying in Maths, Physics and teaching to further her knowledge and understanding of buildings but eventually after more study, Jill would like to be involved in support work at DVC.

Jill Evans, DVC Construction student, commented:
“I have really enjoyed both the theory and practical side of bricklaying. I have gained a better understanding of how buildings begin their journey from below ground level (substructure) to the structural work above ground level (super structure); and have learnt an art of hands-on, building different styles and bonds of walls.

I have gained confidence and friendships through my tutors and fellow students and would like to move towards teaching or structural engineering.

Anyone who has a passion for, or is fascinated with, building work would gain a great deal from the course and would hopefully enjoy it as much as I have”.

The college has a wide range of courses on offer in a variety of vocational areas to help new and existing students achieve their goals.

Enrolment Days are planned throughout August 2012 for potential students to pick up information on the many vocational courses, look around the college at the excellent facilities, chat to course tutors and support staff and get help with online enrolments.

Courses will start from September 2012 and to make access to learning even easier some courses will take place at local community venues in the area.

Enrolment Days will take place at the Manvers Campus from 10.00am until 1.30pm and 3.30pm – 7.30pm on Thursday 16, 23 and 30 August 2012.
