Building Skills for the Future

Local pupils step into the dragon’s den.

Dearne Valley College (DVC) hosted a Business and Computing taster session to give prospective students a chance to build skills for their future.

Youngsters from the local area had the chance to develop a computer game, create the packaging, advertisements and multi-media marketing strategy for the game.

Once developed, participants presented their ideas to a panel of ‘dragons’ in order to see whose concept would get the fictional investment to take their idea to market.

The panel consisted of DVC tutors and Chris Wright from IT Desk who is an ex Dearne Valley College student who set up his own business providing IT solutions. The department has forged good links with IT Desk who offer placements for current Computing and ICT students.

Participants also got to meet tutors and support staff, speak to current full-time students and apply on the day for full-time Business, Administration and Finance, and Computing and ICT courses starting September 2011.

Mark Hepworth, DVC College Information and Advice Officer commented:

“Deciding what to do next and indeed where to continue further study can be a difficult decision. Our taster session aimed to give prospective students an insight into what college life would be like whilst getting hands-on experience”.

Teaching at the Wath based college is mainly practically based with lectures and demonstrations in modern, fully equipped classrooms. With strong links with local companies and suppliers, representatives provide regular demonstrations and talks in college.

Dearne Valley College are now accepting applications for many vocational courses starting September 2011.
