Dearne Valley College (DVC) continues to feel good about learning by offering training opportunities for adults and businesses.
After picking up the Adult Achiever of the Year award at the college’s recent Student Awards Evening Scott Ward (36) from Bolton upon Dearne is testament that through hard work and determination, adults can learn new skills and re-train.
Scott is a technician with a part-time contract teaching Motor Vehicle Body Repair and has now completed his Certificate in Education (Cert Ed) course.
After trying some teaching, Scott decided to undertake the two year part-time course in order to build up his knowledge and skills required for teaching. One of the first things Scott discovered was that he had dyslexia.
Until being diagnosed with dyslexia Scott had put strategies into his normal everyday life to work around the problems to get by. With support from the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) Scott was supplied with equipment to help him with his studies. This included a dictaphone to record lessons and play back at a later point and a laptop with a special device that type up his spoken thoughts.
As part of one of his special studies Scott explored ways of teaching students who also have dyslexia. His specialist subject paper looked at: Understanding How Colour Impacts on Learning in the Motor Vehicle Repair Industry and Education. He investigated, and developed ways of helping other students with dyslexia and implemented those methods in his teaching.
Scott Ward commented:“Although being diagnosed with dyslexia, the condition has not stopped me from learning and completing the Certificate in Education. I chose the qualification to acknowledge my skills in allied trades and get a relevant teaching qualification. From conducting my research I hope to enhance learning opportunities for students at DVC”.
Aimed at practising teachers and trainers working in the post-16 compulsory education and training sector, the part-time Cert Ed course has beauty therapists, hairdressers, engineers, social care trainers, sports coaches from further education, adult education, local government, the armed forces and private training providers studying the qualification.
Following completion of the Cert Ed, some non-graduates go on to further study with the University of Huddersfield to complete a BA degree in education and training.
The Certificate in Education is an award of the University of Huddersfield.

After long negotiations between local Mexborough Sunday Premier league outfit The Dearne Football Club and County Senior Saturday Premier league side, Dearne CMW, an agreement has been reached for the two clubs to merge and create a new club; Dearne Valley Football Club.
Over the past year Dearne CMW (Community Miners Welfare) Football Club have struggled financially, despite reaching the Sheffield challenge cup final. However, the merger affords opportunities for both clubs to become financially and operationally sustainable, with a clear and robust management structure in place.
The new Dearne Valley Football Club will consist of a Saturday team, playing in the South Yorkshire Amateur League and a Sunday team playing in the Mexborough and District premier division. Both teams will be based at Dearne Valley College’s superb Manvers facilities.
The grass pitches at Dearne Valley College have been made available for local teams to play; it is thought that the decision for both teams to be based at the college is the main driving force behind the development of the club.
Stephen Hepworth DVC Sports Centre Manager has been approached to sit on Dearne Valley FC committee to oversee any issues relating to the facilities and will try and assist in making the club more financially sustainable and cost effective. It is envisaged that with the College’s involvement that the club will progress towards charitable status, and further develop it’s opportunities for good local talent within the context of football.
As a direct result of this partnership both teams hope to attract players from the college and the local community to help grow the club for years to come. Phillip Blunt (28) from Wath upon Dearne, the new manager of Dearne Valley Football Club’s Saturday side has a wealth of experience in local football playing to a good standard and is thought to be the right person for the job.
Phil Blunt commented:“I think this is a great opportunity for the club to progress in the right direction, with the base of Dearne Valley College and the continued support of the lads, the club will move forward quickly”.
Both teams are looking for local players and businesses to help in their development, if you want to get involved, play or sponsor the teams contact Club Secretary Craig McShannon on M: 09407 235953 or Paul Riley on M: 07920 450079.
