About This Course

The Foundation Degree (FdSc) in Sports Coaching is ideal for individuals who wish to further their career in the sport, fitness and exercise industry. You will develop both your practical and theoretical knowledge of coaching and fitness as well as covering contemporary units such as coaching active lifestyles, coaching for special populations, and innovative and exclusive delivery.

Why Study With Us?

On our Foundation Degree and BSc Hons Degree in Sport students have access to our excellent sports facilities which includes a fully commercial, on-site sports centre (DVC Sports), a FIFA 2-star accredited 3G Astroturf pitch, multisport cages, full-size grass football pitches, a sports hall, and a state-of-the-art fitness suite.

We also use a wealth of sporting equipment and technology used by professional sports clubs, including a sports GPS system, timing gates and various other technological equipment used to measure fitness and performance.

Entry Requirements

  • 64 UCAS points from a Level 3 qualification e.g. BTEC or Access Diploma or equivalent, plus satisfactory references
  • Minimum of Level 2 English and Maths (GCSE grade C or above, Key Skills or Functional Skills)

This course involves possible contact with children or other potentially vulnerable client groups and, therefore, an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check (formerly an enhanced Criminal Records Bureau check) is a mandatory requirement for this course.

What You Can Progress To

Students will gain a qualification that will support progression to job roles with greater responsibility within this sector, for example, supervisory and management roles. Former students have progressed to top-up Degrees and/or Teacher Training, or into employment in roles such as Sports Coach, Fitness Centre Manager, Outdoor Pursuits Leader, Sports Development Officer, Sports Instructor, Event Manager and many others.

Dearne Valley College offers the BSc (Hons) in Sport and Exercise Performance to allow our students to top-up to a full degree. Other progression routes to top-up your Foundation Degree into a full Bachelor’s Degree may be available in a number of specialist sport areas including:

  • Fitness, exercise and health science
  • Sports science, coaching and performance
  • Sports therapy or sports management

With further specialist study, other job opportunities may include; Sport or PE Teacher, Personal Trainer, Nutritionist, Sports Physiotherapist, or Primary School Teacher.
