Overview

The Diploma in Education and Training is suitable for practising Teachers and Trainers in Education and Skills.
This course is ideal for you if you teach or train in the Further Education and Skills sector.

This includes Further, Higher or Adult Education but also Community and Youth Services, the Health Services, Uniformed Services, Private Training and large organisations with their own training departments.

The sector also includes provision for 14-to-16 year olds in some subjects. On successful completion, you will be able to apply for Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) status. Recent changes to legislation now enable holders of QTLS to teach in schools.

Course content

This qualification covers the knowledge and skills required by Teachers/Trainers in the Further Education and Skills Sector. This includes skills of teaching, facilitation of learning and curriculum development.

In year 1, the mandatory modules are:
Teaching, Learning and Assessment in Education and Training
Theories, Principles and Models in Education and Training

In year 2, the mandatory modules you will cover are:
Developing Teaching, Learning and Assessment in Education and Training
Wider Professional Practice and Development in Education and Training

In order to complete the course successfully, there is also a requirement to cover a range of optional units, such as:

  • Inclusive Practise
  • Teaching in a specialist area
  • Developing and organising resources in a specialist area
     

Opportunities after the course

Upon successful completion, you will be able to apply for Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) Status. Recent changes to legislation now enable holders of QTLS to teach in schools. Other possible progression routes include higher-level qualifications in education or specialist teaching.
 

Entry requirements

If you are applying for the Diploma in Education and Training, you should have a qualification at Level 3 or above in the specialist area that you teach (for example, BTEC, A-Levels, HNC, HND, Degree, CGLI Advanced, NVQ Level 3-4), and relevant work experience in that vocational area/subject.

You need to have a minimum of 50 hours of paid or voluntary teaching available at a recognised training or educational establishment in both years of the course.

All trainees are required to nominate a mentor who will be able to provide support within their specialist teaching area.
You will also need to provide evidence at interview stage of your ability to benefit from the programme, including achievement of the minimum core of language, literacy, numeracy and ICT (e.g. GCSE grade C or above in English and Maths, Functional Skills in Communication and Numeracy).

Self-employed applicants will be required to provide proof of a properly constituted business and to complete a Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly CRB) check for suitability to teach.
