Foundation Degree Travel and Tourism
Amy embarked upon her journey at Dearne Valley College when she completed a BTEC Level 3 National Diploma in Travel and Tourism. Having enjoyed her time at the College, she decided to apply for and successfully gained a place on the Foundation Degree in Travel and Tourism Management.
Speaking of her time studying a foundation degree at Dearne Valley College, she said: “Having studied at the College before, I knew the support system was great, and studying here was cheaper and much closer to home. The College is a very social place and I have made lasting friendships.”
Amy praised the varied content of her course, as well as the opportunity of trips away, and said: “I really enjoyed the mix of practical and written assessments, and everyone was encouraged and given the opportunity to take advantage of residential and day trips, and other events, giving us a fantastic insight into the industry which built up our confidence and independence.”
Since completing the Foundation Degree, Amy used the skills and knowledge gained from her foundation degree to apply for a role as Mixed Fleet Cabin Crew with British Airways. Her application was successful, and she has now been flying with British Airways since February 2014.
Foundation Degree Sport and Exercise
After identifying his strengths in physical activity through his Level 3 Diploma in Public Services at Dearne Valley College, Adam Copley decided to take his education to a higher level and embarked upon the Foundation Degree in Sports Coaching.
Speaking about his time on the Foundation degree, Adam said: “My time at Dearne Valley College was fantastic. It allowed me to rediscover my love for the outdoors with residential trips, gain confidence in public speaking during my time as a student ambassador and armed me with the experience and knowledge I needed to decide on the career I wanted to pursue; which was Personal Training.”
Upon completion of the course, Adam gained a place at the University of South Wales to top-up to a full degree. Adam used the College’s contacts within the sports industry to gain some fantastic placements which included working as a Strength & Conditioning Coach Assistant for both Sheffield United and Sheffield Tigers RUFC, before gaining full time employment with Fitness First.
After gaining a wealth of experience, Adam took the brave leap into self-employment as a Freelance Personal Trainer and Strength & Conditioning Coach, and has since worked with big sporting names including former WBO World Cruiserweight Champion, Neil Dawson and players from both Sheffield Wednesday’s academy and Worcester Warriors Rugby Club, as well as training participants for physical challenge events such as ‘Tough Mudder’.
Adam thanks his beginnings at Dearne Valley College that led to his success, and added: “Dearne Valley College were very supportive of my ambitions by encouraging me to grow and continue aiming high. My Tutors helped me to develop myself both professionally and personally and it was a thoroughly fantastic four years of my life.”
Foundation Degree Early Childhood Studies
After working for a private nursery setting for a number of years, Sarah Brooks decided to embark upon the Foundation Degree in Early Childhood Studies at Dearne Valley College.
She said: “To gain a senior role within the Health and Social Care industry, you have to hold or be working towards a higher level qualification, so I decided that after many years in my role at the Nursery setting, I was ready to work towards gaining a senior position.”
“Studying on the Foundation Degree was a fantastic opportunity to build up the higher level knowledge I craved and I also gained a much deeper understanding of child development.
I worked alongside some very inspirational practitioners with whom I was able to share good practice; this made my experience at Dearne Valley College as enjoyable as it was valuable. I was able to really apply to knowledge I was gaining on the course to my practice in my setting, and whilst on the Foundation Degree, I successfully applied for and gained a Room Leader position in the nursery I was working in”.
Since graduating, Sarah gained a place at Sheffield Hallam University to study the BA (Hons) top up degree in Early Years, and after the first year she also applied to study on the Early Years Teacher Status (EYTS). She is now waiting to begin a Masters level degree in Early Childhood Education, and having successfully gaining a Nursery Manager position, Sarah can now proudly boast that she manages two Early Years settings.
