At Dearne Valley College, our School Liaison team is dedicated to providing a comprehensive School Liaison Service and are committed to working with local schools, colleges and Connexions to raise awareness and knowledge of Further and Higher Education (HE) opportunities.

This page sets out our school liaison offer. You’ll find out about the programme and how to book your pupils onto sessions. We’re really keen to work with teachers and careers advisors to ensure that pupils are kept up to date with changes affecting Further and Higher Education opportunities as well as provide as much information as possible to help your pupils achieve their goals.

The School Liaison Service aims to:

-Raise aspirations and ensure students are aware of the opportunities available to them in Further and Higher Education.
-Provide a comprehensive service toallow students to make a successful transition into Further Education.
-Ensure more students start FE on the right programme, at the right level, in the right place and with the right support.
-Work closely with partners to support new initiatives and to provide a collaborative approach to education and training.

Activities are available throughout the year at college and within school. We can adapt any activities to suit the needs and requirements of your pupils and welcome any suggestions on how we can develop our activities.

DVC is delighted to support any events throughout the academic year including careers fairs, parent’s evenings, option evenings, enterprise events and many more, so please don’t hesitate to contact us.

School Liaison Activities

Our School Liaison team can arrange a variety of activities within school or at college to support pupils and schools.

Careers Events and Parents Evenings
Available all year round - Years 9,10 & 11

Our School Liaison team are committed to attending school events including careers events, parents evenings and options evenings. We will provide impartial IAG to students and parents about the options available to them. In addition we will also present them with an excellent range of information and guidance materials.

School Leavers Presentation
Available all year round- Years 10 & 11

We can visit your school to present an overview of DVC including the different courses, levels, support, finance and facilities. The presentation can be tailored to fit an assembly or delivered more in depth during a school lesson. Depending on time allocation we can also offer a break out session to discuss
any queries your pupils may have.

Apprenticeships Presentation
Available all year round - Years 10 & 11

Delivered by the DVC Apprenticeships team, this informative presentation provides students with information, tips and advice about the apprenticeship pathway.

Pathways and Preferences Presentation
Available all year round - Years 8 & 9

This presentation is great for Year 8 and 9 and is designed to help support their pathways decisions. As with the school leavers presentation this can also be tailored to fit an assembly or delivered more in depth during a school lesson.

College Tours
Available all year round - Years 9,10 & 11

College tours are perfect for students who haven’t narrowed down their options to one subject area. We will take individuals or groups of students on a tour of the whole college looking at different classrooms and workshops. Hopefully this will help students get an idea of the bigger picture! They will also have chance to look around our excellent college facilities such as:

GCSE Revision Days
Available all year round - Years 10 & 11

Why not host a GCSE subject revision day at DVC and take advantage of our excellent facilities FREE of charge! You could also include a college tour or taster within the day and give your pupils an excellent insight into what post 16 opportunities are available.

Quiz a Student Sessions
Available all year round - Years 10 & 11

The School Liaison team can arrange for one of our Student Ambassadors to come to your school and answer relevant questions on college life. They explain the benefits of college life and describe the many commitments they face.

Common Application Process (CAP) Workshops
Available all year round - Year 11

The School Liaison team is available to deliver impartial sessions on how to successfully complete application forms online. All of our school liaison staff are fully trained on the UCAS Progress application process.

Area Wide Prospectus (AWP) Workshops
Available all year round - Year 11

The School Liaison team is available to deliver specialised sessions on the AWP for pupils and staff within Rotherham, Barnsley, Doncaster and Sheffield secondary schools. The team will educate you on the purpose of AWP and highlight the different functions of the AWP, to ensure the experience of both
pupils and staff is less stressful and ensure they get the best from the system.

Subject Presentations and Workshops
Available all year round - Years 9,10 & 11

Each curriculum area can also visit your school to deliver specialist presentations and workshops on a particular vocational area.

Mock Interviews
Available all year round - Years 10 & 11

Delivered in school or at our Manvers campus we can support students with what is expected in a real life interview and how they can improve the way they present themselves. The School Liaison team will provide constructive feedback on all aspects of the interview process. Interviews can be tailored to
last between 15 to 30 minutes.

Careers Advice and Guidance Sessions
Available all year round - Years 10 & 11

The School Liaison team has fully trained members of staff who can offer impartial Careers Advice and Guidance on a one to one basis. Delivered in school these sessions are designed to give students an understanding of entry criteria, progression routes and to finalise pupil’s choices for post-16 education.

Dearne Valley College Commended for Information, Advice and Guidance Services!

Dearne Valley College has once again demonstrated their continued commitment to providing high quality Careers, Information, Advice and Guidance (CIAG) services, and following a rigorous assessment process, have been awarded the matrix standard.

The matrix report made reference to the College’s ability to provide impartial guidance for prospective students at the pre-entry stage, encouraging them to consider all training providers, educational routes and career paths, and it considered this strength to be exemplary.

Survey shows Over 92% of DVC Students Progress to Success!

A ‘destinations’ survey compiled by Dearne Valley College has discovered that a fantastic 91.7% of their former students progressed onward to employment, education or training, following the completion of a course with them.

Dearne Valley College Recognised as ‘Investors in Diversity’

The College has been recognised for their comprehensive efforts to promote equality and celebrate the breadth of diversity amongst staff and students, and are pleased to announce that they have been accredited with the prestigious ‘Investors in Diversity’ quality mark from the National Centre for Diversity.

College Welcomes Sports Maker and Academy of Sport Manager

In an effort to continue the college’s campaign of increasing the number of young people who actively participate in sport and fitness on a regular basis, Dearne Valley College have welcomed two members of staff into their team, in the form of the College’s Sports Maker, Nick Gill, and Academy of Sport Manager, Adrian Tallon.

Dearne Valley College Apprenticeship Scheme Growing!

With their successful Apprenticeship scheme and a dedicated Apprenticeship team, the College have welcomed a 33% growth in the number of Apprentices they support, and strive to continue increasing the number of students they support into work placements.

College Launches Partnership for Higher Education Courses

Dearne Valley College are working in partnership with leading institution, Teesside University, to provide students with a range of high quality, full and part-time, industry-led higher education programmes, right on their doorsteps.

Attendance Officer Supports DVC Students to Achieve

Dearne Valley College welcomed an Attendance Officer to support the students in achieving the best possible attendance record, and stress the College’s motto of ‘the more you attend, the more you achieve’.

Career Coach

DVC Career Coach

Career Coach is a web based solution providing localised employment information, advice and guidance. It is designed to help students gain information about
local employment opportunities and skills required to pursue their career aspirations.

The system features both real time and projected local labour market trends for jobs in a vast variety of industries. The system also identifies different career routes that require a similar skills set to help students broaden their understanding of different job roles.

The School Liaison team are able to work with groups of students (with computers and internet access) to explore their career goals - available all year round for Years 9, 10 and 11.

DVC Skills Roadshow

DVC Skills Roadshow

At DVC we have developed a Skills Roadshow for Years 7 to 11. The Skills Roadshow was launched in the 2010-2011 academic year and was a huge success working with a number of local feeder schools.

The DVC Roadshow provides an excellent insight into a range of vocational courses via fun, hands-on and interactive workshops. The DVC Roadshow can be delivered either on site in school, or at DVC’s Manvers Campus. A standard roadshow would be planned to run over a morning or afternoon with 2-4 curriculum areas on offer.

Taster Days

DVC Taster Days

A great way of gaining a real insight into College life and a specific curriculum area at DVC would be to take part in a college taster. Delivered at the Manvers and Rockingham Campuses, students will be able to see our excellent facilities, meet existing students and sample the atmosphere of a busy vocational college.

Bespoke Taster Days

As well as the taster days listed above we can also offer tasters that are tailormade to fit your school’s requirements and fulfil any specific curriculum needs. All of the activities are designed to challenge, motivate and engage students as they begin to research their chosen career.

Tasters are free of charge and are available in any subject!

FREE Transport for Schools

DVC have a limited amount of funding to pay for transport for schools who would like to bring students to the college to take part in college tasters. This funding is on a first come, first serve basis.

In School tasters

At DVC we understand that it is not always possible for students to be taken out of school to take part in college tasters so we have developed a range
of sessions which can be delivered on site within your school.

The tasters have been developed to fit within a 45 – 60 min lesson but all sessions could be developed to be delivered over a full morning or afternoon.
