Studying Foundation Learning at Dearne Valley College

Unlocking Potential, Realising Aspirations and Achieving Success
Foundation Learning provides courses for students who have difficulties with learning. Our courses will help you develop the skills you want for the home and the workplace.

Foundation Learning has a team of specially-trained staff to help you achieve your goals by providing the support and encouragement you need to grow in confidence.


We offer small group tuition with a high level of support. Our Progress Coach will work with you and the Teaching team to ensure you succeed on your programme.

Learning Environment
• Dedicated classrooms to deliver independent living skills
• Access to industry-standard facilities in each of the vocational areas of the College to deliver a range of practical courses
• Dedicated workshop and IT facilities to deliver Literacy and Numeracy
• A range of additional support staff to assist in all day-to-day situations
• Students will also benefit from the College’s allotment which is a tranquil outdoor space, thriving with both fruit and vegetables
• Students will have the opportunity to take part in a weekly youth club to enable them to take part in a variety of activities to build on their social skills and confidence.

Progression
We will support you to take part in community and volunteering opportunities; this is a great way to boost your employability and life skills. You may also be able to progress to other courses at the College and we’ll work closely with you to find a course that suits your career aspirations.

Assessment Methods
• Portfolio: You will create a portfolio or workbook of evidence such as practical work, presentations and case studies
• Assignments: You will be given tasks and projects to complete
• Practical Work: Your Tutor will assess you completing practical work in the workshop or workplace

These are a selection of qualifications of varying levels and content which are designed to enhance work and living skills in a range of contexts. They are appropriate for a diverse range of learners including:
• 14 to 19 year old learners
• Adults returning to study
• Those seeking to develop greater independence
• Those who have not yet achieved accredited qualifications
• Those with specific learning needs
