Learning Environment
As an Early Years student, you may spend up to 50% of your time on work placement which is an essential element of your course and will provide you with hands-on experience. It will also demonstrate to employers that you have gained a broad range of work skills whilst studying for your qualifications and improve your confidence around both clients and colleagues.

Your taught sessions will be based in our dedicated childcare training room, which is fully equipped with resources and materials. Our teaching team are highly experienced, having worked in a wide variety of childcare establishments.

You will be required to wear a Dearne Valley College polo shirt during work placement duties. This is available to purchase from College.

How you will be assessed
• Assignments: You will be given specific assignments or projects to complete. These will be in a variety of formats, such as work experience, presentations, posters, group work, reports and other activities as well as externally set assignments.
• Portfolio: You will create a portfolio or workbook of evidence such as practical work, presentations and case studies
• Practical/Group Work: Your Tutor will assess you completing practical work in the workshop or workplace
• Some courses have end of unit tests.

Additional Qualifications
As well as your chosen course, you may also have the opportunity to undertake a variety of additional qualifications throughout your time at Dearne Valley College which will boost your CV and career aspirations!

• Paediatric First Aid
• Baby Massage
• Makaton
• Safeguarding

You will also study a variety short courses relating to supporting children with Special Education Needs and Autistic Spectrum Disorder.

Personalised Learning Programme
As part of your main programme you will have the opportunity to choose from a range of course sizes to enable you to specialise within an area depending on your career aspirations. The Personalised Learning Programme is unique to Dearne Valley College which allows you to gain a qualification tailored to you.
