Equality Duties

We are committed to promoting and celebrating diversity and equality of opportunity. We appreciate the benefits and richness that diversity brings to the college. We want your time at college to be enjoyable, successful and stimulating. Racism or treating people badly because of their age, class, sexuality, religion, physical or mental differences is unacceptable. We reject any behaviour which allows this to happen.

Whilst you are at DVC the college will:

  • Provide impartial information, advice and guidance to enable you to choose a course/s that will help you to achieve your goals, taking into account your existing qualifications, skills and experience
  • Make sure you know what you need to do to achieve your goals and qualification/s to progress further
  • Support you to develop the skills that will enhance your employment potential and/or prepare you to go onto the next level of study
  • Provide support to help you deal positively with any difficulties
  • Provide skilled and appropriately qualified staff
  • Promote a healthy and safe way of life
  • Provide you with a clean, safe and supprtive college environment
  • Involve you in the future development of the college to help us to improve
  • Encourage you to make a positive contribution to college life and the community, to enjoy being a student and to access student activities

As a student you are responsible for adhering to the colleges policy and commitment to equality and diversity.

It is your responsibility to:

  • Take responsibility for yourself, your safety and success - ask for help if you need it and take up the support that is offered
  • Work hard, attend regularly, let us know if you cannot attend, be punctual and hand your work in on time
  • Be honest and ony hand in work that is your own and hasnt been copied from books, another person or the Internet
  • Balance your college work and other commitments
  • Respect the college, by helping to keep it safe, clean and tidy and a good place to work and learn
  • Inform the college of any change in circumstances e.g. change of address
  • Follow college rules, regulations and codes of conduct and always behave in a way which respects the needs and rights of others, showing care and consideration

Dearne Valley College has begun work on a Single Equality Scheme, our Equality Policy. This document sets out our diversity strategy and shows how we will meet our legislative duties with respect to equality and diversity. These include the general and specific public duties outlined by the Race Equality Duty, the Disability Equality Duty and the Gender Equality Duty.

Our Single Equality Scheme will bring together the work we have done to date, and set out our equality objectives going forward. The college has a comprehensive action plan for equality, which will be regularly reviewed and monitored, and is carrying out equality impact assessments on key policies and procedures.
